2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Change Follows Lukewarm Response
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a distinct game identity.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
The news mirrors a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep observing the development of the game in the months to ahead.
David
