Citizens encouraged to avoid going out as severe gales lash the country.

Severe gusts hitting velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 homes experiencing outages and forced authorities to call off more than 100 air travel services, as reported by regional news sources.

The gales are affecting the whole southern region and lower areas of the North Island, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced infrequent severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in central regions such as Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been advised to stay indoors, avoid travel, and prepare for additional electricity and network failures.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Measures

This outage is primarily influencing residences mainly in the South Island, though agencies state that power was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have stated that in some places homes have lost their roofs, while utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the winds.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a woman was blown onto approaching vehicles on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel to and from the urban area have been halted as a result of the weather, and certain highways and community centers are shut down.

Simultaneously Canterbury officials have issued a state of emergency, to assist recovery activities.
