Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
