England along with Wales Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
