Department of Justice Intervenes in Legal Challenge to Block the State of California's Redistricting Plan

Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.

This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.

"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.

Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.

"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.

Legal Basis

The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.

"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.

Political Context

The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.

In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.

Wider Consequences

The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.

The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
